We’re excited to announce the launch of the Travel & Community Pass, a powerful new addition to THE WHEEL OF INDEPENDENCE™ Online Tooldesigned to support practitioners working with young people, particularly those with special educational needsThis new feature brings in-depth, structured and practical travel skills tracking directly into the existing independence-building framework.

THE WHEEL OF INDEPENDENCE™ framework helps professionals monitor and measure outcomes across daily living, community participation, and functional life skills. Whilst the existing framework touches upon some elements required for independent travel e.g. road crossing, using public transport and using money, the new Travel & Community Pass allows for specific, structured work on core skills such as

  • safety before leaving
  • problem-solving on the move
  • road safety
  • navigating public transport and
  • visiting shops and restaurants.

What the Travel & Community Pass Adds

The Travel & Community Pass has been thoughtfully developed based on real-world needs and practical experience. It:

  • Simplifies travel training tracking, enabling practitioners to capture travel-related milestones and progress more clearly.
  • Provides a “pass” system, whereby students’ progress through the levels to achieve a pass to their local community and then beyond, giving staff and parents the confidence to understand when a student is ready to travel more independently.
  • Allows uploading of evidence, making reporting easy in a few simple clicks.

Practitioners can now chart progress with more precision – from initial travel understanding to confident community navigation – and integrate these insights into personalised learner plans.

We’ve been using the Travel Pass system at Moor House School & College for over 10 years. One of our Highly Specialist Occupational Therapists reported:

“The Travel Pass has transformed the way we prepare students for community access. It reduces anxiety and boosts confidence during real‑world travel”.

Designed to Support Meaningful Outcomes

Travel competence is a vital component of independence for young adults and learners with diverse needs. By embedding travel skills into THE WHEEL OF INDEPENDENCE framework, practitioners can now offer support that is both measurable and meaningful – helping learners to translate everyday experiences into sustainable independence.

Whether you’re supporting learners to navigate public transport, plan community outings, or build confidence, the new Travel & Community Pass strengthens how progress is documented, shared, and planned.

Existing users of THE WHEEL OF INDEPENDENCE™ online tool can use the Travel & Community Pass immediately within their accounts.  Those new to online tool can sign up for a 30-day free trial, which includes the new feature as part of the experience.
